Bryce

Hi, my name is Bryce. I am 5 years old and I’m getting ready to start kindergarten next year. I am the oldest of my siblings; I have a younger brother and sister whom I love very much. I like to ride my bike, go swimming, play video games and hang out with my friends. But now I have to do all these and manage my diabetes.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on December 22, 2009, three days before Christmas. My mom had taken me to the doctor one week before Thanksgiving for a consultation appointment to talk about diabetes and some of the signs my mom had been recognizing. We had my blood and urine tested they both came back within normal range. During my pre-school Christmas concert my mom noticed that I had to use the bathroom three times during a 45 minute program. She also noticed that I was still constantly thirsty and was showing mood swings.

The next day my mom took me back to see the doctor and the doctor decided to retest me. The next morning the doctor called back to inform us that my blood sugar levels were 398. We then scheduled an appointment for the following morning with the diabetic team so that my family could learn how to take care of me. We spent Christmas getting used to the life with diabetes.

I now know how to test my blood sugar and I am getting used to counting carbohydrates with my mom every time I eat. I don’t like getting shots 5-6 times a day. I hope that one day there will be a cure and I will return back to life before I had diabetes. I do not get a break from diabetes; it is there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We pray every night before bed for a cure!
